The city of Allentown is now turning a corner and beginning to forge a new identity after years of struggling with the loss of its iconic retailers and manufacturers. Like many of our nation’s small cities, the downtown became a shell of its yesteryear as retailers had moved to contrived imitation downtowns called malls, or “lifestyle centers,” built with the wave of sprawl beyond the city limits. Manufacturing also left our urban cores for the artificial industrial “parks” that ate into our rural farmland, leaving empty factories and offices looming in a once proud cityscape…
